Imagine going to your local car showroom, buying a car and then racing that car over 9,200 kilometres, criss-crossing Australia, through the searing heat of the outback, to the sultry humidity of the tropic, through the snow and ice of the Snowy Mountains onto the tarmac of the Eastern Coast. East to West from Sydney to Perth and North to South from Melbourne to Darwin.
Racing in temperatures over 40 degrees, bulldust so thick you can't see beyond the front bumper, dodging the local wildlife and the potholes. Then you breakdown. No rescue crew to fix the problem, you do it yourself with the tools in your car. Need to rebuild the engine? No problem we can fix it.

This video presents a blow by blow account of the 1954 trial, through each state, right around the country. The adventures and dangers encountered by the drivers are told through newsreels, home movies, photographs, newspapers and interviews.
This video has been mastered from the original 1950's cinefilm and, although the image has been filtered and enhanced, the quality is not as high as today's DVD standard.
